TaftsAleHouseLogoLet me start by trying to explain how much I love Brettanomyces.  If you aren’t familiar with this “wild” yeast, you’d be doing yourself a favor as a beer geek to start to get to know it.

It’s present in a lot of beer that I would call “funky” versus being “sour”… it lends a nice fruity note when it’s fresh, and turns to some earthy, funky flavors as it ages.  There’s a lot more that we could go into about it – but I suppose we should tackle that at another time.

Today’s about Taft’s Ale House.

The Over The Rhine brewery is relapsing their first Brett Fermented beer this Thursday, called ‘Skin Off The Mango’.

About The Beer

I haven’t gotten the chance to try this puppy quite yet, so I can’t give you my specific tasting notes as of writing this.  What I do know is that the beer comes in at 6.6% ABV and is 22 IBUs.

It’s a Saison fermented with Brettanomyces for 4 months and infused with fresh Mango.  What I anticipate is a funky, fruity fresh beer, with an underlying earthy funk that will tease the palate with deep flavors that will only improve as your glass warms up a bit…. but like I said, I’m just assuming that’s what it’s going to be like.  If you want to find out for yourself, you’re going to need to head down to Taft’s to find out for yourself.

Skin Off The MangoThe Tapping

You can experience this one for yourself this week, they’re tapping it on Thursday at 6pm.  Make your way to Taft’s to get your hands on what I hope is the start to a very full series of Brett Beers.
