Starting with a strong, yet balanced, malt and hop profile on the nose, Rollcage Red Ale continues by deftly balancing Maris Otter malt, 60L caramel and a hint of chocolate malt with Chinook, and other wonderfully citrusy and herbal hops along with a drying finish.

It seems that whenever I start looking one of Motorworks beers up to learn about it, I’m hit with award, after award.  They are one of those breweries that I’m not certain enough people in my area are aware about, yet, but are putting out some fantastic beers that are just now starting to show up in our market.  They’re flying under the radar here, I guess.

I have had more than my fair share of Red Ales that have let me down.  There are some really mediocre examples of the style being brewed around the country.  Luckily for me, Roll Cage is not of of these ‘Mediocre Reds’, it’s actually pretty fantastic.

My Thoughts On The Beer:

Guess what color this red ale pours in your glass?  It’s a nice, beautiful ruby red color with a thin white head that sits right on top.

You can expect aromas of caramel graininess and a nice earthy breadiness.

The taste?  This is where it shines for me.  It’s a balanced beauty of a beer, full of that toasted maltiness that is hit from behind with a herbal hop character that reminds you that you’re drinking a red ale.  It’s dance back and forth between maltiness and hoppiness is incredibly pleasing and makes me want to drink more of it.
