Brewery – Urban Artifact
Beer – Whirligig
Style – Midwest Fruit Tart Ale
ABV – 8%
PH – 3.5

Whirligig is a Middle English term for a spinning contraption. It is typically referring to a children’s toy, but also applicable to any mechanism that rotates. This Midwest Fruit Tart is brewed with 3,000 lbs of blueberries and 60g of vanilla beans per 30 BBL batch.

Whirligig was first released in the Urban Artifact taproom on August 15th, 2017.  This is a perfect example of what they do best there – fresh fruit is showcased in a tart beer that resembles a smoothie more than it does a beer that you might have tried before.  So many of us are used to drinking blueberry beers that use flavor extracts and taste like a shadow of a fresh blueberry – this beer is most definitely not one of those beers, it’s like a dessert in a glass!

My Thoughts On Urban Artifact Whirligig

What a great way to end the summer months!  Whirligig is deep purple colored when you pour it in your glass, which a very small pink head on top.

The aromas are of fresh blueberries – but there is a cake like scent as well that goes along with the fruit that I’m really liking.

The flavor is like a mix of a smoothie and a blueberry pie.  The body of the beer comes across as nice, and thick – like a smoothie.  The fruit is certainly in your face and the sweetness and the tartness almost balance each other out from time to time, before each one shoots to the forefront of the taste.  Such a refreshing, yet big and flavorful beer.  This is really delicious.
