I have to admit… this falls easily into one of those categories of breweries that I should be a massive fan of, but just because of the amount of time I spend trying to keep up with the places down here in Cincinnati I often struggle to get to know. I have a coupe bottled beers from Pretentious Barrel House that I’ve picked up from around town – and based on that… they’re certainly worthy of a shout out, these guys are pretty freaking fun.

The brewery opened its doors in October of 2017 – becoming the first brewery in Columbus to specialize exclusively in barrel-aged sour beers. They pride themselves on their knowledge of the “symbiotic relationship between beer and wood, that results in consistent, quality sours”. They point out that by manufacturing a wide range of beer along the sour spectrum, their consumers can ease their way into the unique group of styles that has definitely become more popular in the last few years with craft beer fans.

Their goal? To produce award-winning sours that can change people’s perspectives regarding craft beer.

About Indolence

The brewery just so happened to drop into my inbox this morning with the news of the return of their Indolence, which was a taproom favorite when it was originally released in early 2018. The sour blonde ale has a nice, low acidity and exudes an aroma of passion fruit, giving it a character that the brewery says defines the term “easy drinking”. The balance between lactose, vanilla and passion fruit imparts a flavor that they say is truly greater than the sum of its parts.

“This is easily our best selling beer, the flavor combination of oak, passion fruit, and vanilla create such a unique experience,” says Joshua Martinez, brewmaster. “The beer is both sweet and sour, fresh and savory. The kind of beer that cannot accurately be described; it must be experienced.”

The beer will be available starting on Friday, February 28th starting at 4 pm when the taproom opens its doors.

If you want to know more about these guys, that’s the best way, too – the taproom. It’s located at 745 Taylor Ave in Columbus. If you would rather get your bearings first… you can hit up their website too.
